Treatments of Hyperbilirubinemia

1. Phototherapy

An infant undergoing the phototherapy is placed unclothed under a bank of lights (8 fluorescent bulbs), the eyes are shieled, and hydration is maintained.

The light changes the isomerization of the bilirubin in the skin so that it may be excreted. The time at which phototherapy is initiated varies according to infant's gestational age and the cause of jaundice.

2. Exchange transfusion

This technique rapidly eliminates bilirubin from the circulation.

Small aliquots of the infant's blood are removed via a catheter in a peripheral artery or an umbilical vessel and replaced with similar aliquots of donor red cells mixed with plasma.
